TIPS FROM DARRELL, OWNER OF BALLYHOOD INTERNATIONAL! Normal trolling speed is between 6-9 mph, depending on the seas. The best thing to keep in mind is ensuring that the lures remain in the water while trolling them as close to the boat as possible. They will form a recognizable pattern. Lure head shape should be taken into consideration when determining trolling speed as well as distance from boat--"I like to put all bullet head lures closest to the boat because they will tend to have less bounce. Jet heads or any type of concave head such as bubble makers should be dropped back into calmer water so that the bubble trails will be visible underwater, and attract the targeted fish." Run birds and daisy chains at the rear of your patterns. Ideal distance for your bullet heads will be at about the 2nd to 3rd wake back behind the boat. Jets and concave heads should be in the 4th to 5th wake area, while your birds, daisy chains, and other attracting lures will ride the 5th to 8th wakes, as well as running them shotgun or on the outriggers in clam water! "If the seas are calm, or if fishing is slow, I recommend speeding up the boat a little-you will also need to let the lines out a bit to compensate for the higher speed". Spreader bars don't have to be a hassle! Our spreader bars are equipped with a ball bearing snap swivel in the last lure so that you can attach a release clip to it, running your line through the clip so when you get a strike you will only have to fight the fish, not the spreader bar as well! Tie the bar off high on the boat to a T-Top to keep the nose out of the water so that only the lures will be trolling behind the boat producing a great looking 'natural' pattern of bait fish! |
